West Seattle Housing Study

Affordable homes rooted in community, connected to the landscape of the PNW...

Seattle, Washington
Development Study | with SMR Architects

This project explores the potential for affordable homeownership on a city-owned site in West Seattle, organized around clarity of structure, shared space, and long-term livability.

The proposal accommodates 21 units within a compact footprint, using a mass timber system of glue-laminated framing and cross-laminated timber panels. The structural approach establishes a clear and repeatable framework, supporting both efficiency in construction and a warm, materially expressive interior environment.

Housing units are organized to balance density with access to light, air, and shared space. A rooftop terrace serves as a collective amenity, extending daily life outward and offering views to the surrounding landscape, including the Olympic Mountains.

The study demonstrates how thoughtful organization, structural clarity, and material choice can support attainable housing while maintaining architectural quality—aligning development constraints with a durable and coherent built form.

The West Seattle Housing Study reflects an approach focused on clarity, material, and connection to place.
